The Old Testament was originally written in the Hebrew. It contains 39 books in all.

List of books and brief overview:

Genesis

The history of the beginning. It was written by Moses around 1500 BC

Exodus

This book has to do with the birth of Moses and Israel's escape from Egypt. It was written by Moses around 1485 BC

Leviticus

This book mainly deals with laws for the priests.  It was written by Moses around 1470 BC

Numbers

This book is divided into two sections.  The first  9 chapters deal with the numbering of the various tribes
and the journey resumes in chapter 10. This book contains the record of the spies that were sent out. It was written around 1460 BC

Deuteronomy

This book gives a second account of the giving of the law and a beautiful  exhortation by Moses to the people. It also gives the account of Joshua taking Moses's place to continue to take the promised land.

Joshua

This book begins the historical books with Joshua leading the people into the promised land. It was written around 1410 BC.

Judges

The book of Judges tells of God raising up leaders.  It also tells the story of Samson and Delilah.  Scholars believe this book to be a shadow of what happens in the book of Acts.

Ruth

This little book only contains 4 chapters and tells the story of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz.

I & II Samuel

These books tell you about Samuel, King Saul, and contains the history of King David. Popular stories that are from this book include the slaying of the giant by David.

I & II Kings

These books tell you the remaining history of the Israelite kingdom before being carried away into captivity.  Included in these books are inspiring stories of the prophets Elijah, Elisha, and King Solomon. 

I & II Chronicles

These books give another viewpoint of the history of Israel and were taken from the national religious records.  They are believed to be mainly written by Daniel and Ezra.

Ezra

This book was written by Ezra who is considered to be one of Jews greatest historians.

Nehemiah

Companion book to Ezra and written by Nehemiah who was another great historian.

Esther

This book contains the story of Haman attempting to have all God's people destroyed only to be hung on the very gallows that he made for them.

Job

Many believe that this is one of the oldest books in The Bible.  It contains the story of Job.

Psalms

This book is a collection of inspiring poems which contain many messianic prophecies. It contains poems  written from Moses,David, Asaph, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Jerimiah. 

Proverbs

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings from Solomon.

Ecclesiastes

A book attributed to Solomon. 

The Song of Solomon

This book tells of the love of Christ for His church. written by Solomon.

Isaiah

This is a book that contains many messianic prophecies.  It was written around 700 BC

Jeremiah

This book tells the story of Jeremiah and his acts. 

Lamentations

A poem by Jeremiah. 

Ezekiel

This book contains prophecies from the prophet Ezekiel.  The book itself is rich  in prophecy and includes messianic prophecies which foretell the coming of Christ.  some scholars believe this book to be a shadow of the book of revelation.


Daniel

In this book you can read about Daniel in the lions den as well as the 3 men who were cast into the fire and not burned.  This book also contains interesting prophecies about world governments.

Hosea

In this book Jews are rebuked for their wickedness.

Joel

This book was written around 830 BC and contains the prophecy of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Amos

The book of Amos contains 9 chapters and is divided into 3 parts:
Part one is where the nations are summoned to judgement because of their sins ( 1:1 to 2:3 )
Part two describes the spiritual condition of Judah and Israel (2:4 to 6:14)
In part three there are two prophetic visions which refer to judgements against the guilty,
two prophetic visions showing just how ripe they really are for the judgements to come to pass
and the last describes the overthrow and ruin of Israel as well as the promise of restoration (to which is added the promise of restoration of the kingdom and its final glory in the Messiah's kin)

Obadiah

Obadiah is the shortest book of the Old Testament. It contains only 1 chapter.

Jonah

This book tells the story of Jonah and whale with an interesting ending. A must read for those who care more for their lawns than people.

Micah

This book foretells the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem

Nahum

This book contains 3 chapters.

Habakkuk

Written in conversational form this book contains just three chapters. The apostle Paul was believed to have intensely studied this book.

Zephaniah

The book of Zephaniah contains three chapters and foretells the "day of wrath" and the reward of the good. 



Haggai

This book contains two chapters

Zechariah

This book contains many messianic prophecies. Including the foretelling of Him riding on the colt and His betrayal, as well as the sum of money received.

Malachi

This book contains messianic prophecies and also deals with why one should tithe.
